THE VID2SUBS GUIDE

From first upload to final caption.

Vid2Subs gives you a quick transcript and the tools to make it accurate, readable, and yours. Here’s what happens in the studio, what you can change, and which export fits your project.

01

Start with a timed draft

Each caption needs the right words and a start and end time. If a line arrives early, it can spoil a reveal; if it stays too long, it can cover the next scene. Automatic transcription gets you started, but a careful playback pass makes the result trustworthy.

02

How transcription works

Start by choosing an MP4, MOV, WebM, or supported audio file. The browser checks the file and opens a local preview. Before transcription, you can choose a font and starting animation. Vid2Subs prepares audio from the media and sends audio chunks, not the whole original video, to a Cloudflare Pages Function. That function calls Cloudflare Workers AI with Whisper Large V3 Turbo and returns the available transcript and timing data.

The studio places returned segments on the timeline using the model’s timestamps. When reliable word timings are present, word-following effects can use them; otherwise, timing stays at caption level. Review the result before sharing, especially when speech is quiet, rapid, or mixed with music.

03

Edit the words and timing yourself

Automatic text is a draft. Click a caption to jump to its place in the video, then correct the wording. Add a missing caption, delete an unnecessary one, or split a long cue at the playhead. Drag timeline blocks to move them or pull an edge to change their duration. Playback stays tied to the current video time.

04

Make subtitles look like your content

Subtitles do more than repeat dialogue. Type, color, position, and motion can make a tutorial easier to follow or give a short video its own rhythm. Vid2Subs includes font choices, color controls, outline and shadow settings, position controls, and animation presets. You can set a style for all captions, then select a word or even individual characters when a phrase needs emphasis. The preview updates as you change the appearance.

A quiet treatment may suit an interview; a creator clip might call for stronger weight and a careful highlight. Check contrast over changing footage. With custom positioning, move the subtitle away from faces or important action. Only import fonts you have the right to use.

05

Choose between SRT and a captioned MP4

The simplest export is an SRT file. It preserves your edited subtitle text and corrected start and end times, and you can use it in another editor or on a platform that accepts external captions. SRT is text plus timing, so it does not carry Vid2Subs colors, fonts, or animations. Keep the SRT when you want a portable subtitle track or plan to make more changes elsewhere.

If you want the chosen appearance visible in the picture itself, select the captioned MP4 export. On supported browsers, Vid2Subs renders the video with burned-in subtitles, keeps the source aspect ratio, and attempts to preserve audio. Browser media encoders differ, so MP4 export is disabled where the necessary APIs or encoding support are missing. It also renders in real time and may take longer on a phone or an older laptop. The studio shows progress rather than handing you a fake download.

06

Files, languages, and practical limits

Vid2Subs accepts common video formats such as MP4, MOV, and WebM, plus common audio files when the browser can decode them. A filename extension alone does not guarantee playback: the codec inside a MOV or MP4 must also be supported by your browser. For the current browser-first pipeline, uploads are limited to 50 MB and videos are limited to five minutes. Those limits help keep local extraction and rendering manageable, especially on mobile devices.

Speech recognition automatically detects the language and supports English and Hindi recordings. Detection still depends on the recording and the model. If a clip has silence or no clear speech, the service should report that instead of creating made-up subtitles. For a smoother online subtitle workflow, use a clear recording, reduce background noise when possible, and check proper names, numbers, and mixed-language passages by ear.

07

Privacy and the meaning of free

The original media is opened locally in your browser rather than uploaded to a Vid2Subs video library. To generate subtitles, the app sends prepared audio chunks to Cloudflare for speech recognition. That means transcription is not offline, even though playback, editing, local project saving, SRT creation, and supported export happen on your device. Saved projects, including their media and imported fonts, live in this browser’s IndexedDB storage until you remove them or clear site data.

Looking for a subtitle generator free of account setup? Vid2Subs currently does not require a sign-up or payment from visitors. That is not the same as unlimited free subtitle processing: Cloudflare Workers AI has usage allowances and rate limits, and the service may be unavailable when those limits are reached. The site does not promise unlimited minutes or automatic access to paid capacity. For details on what leaves your browser, read the privacy policy before using sensitive recordings.

08

Made for short videos

Caption a short-form post, podcast highlight, lesson, or product walkthrough. Portrait and landscape clips keep their source aspect ratio in the preview and supported MP4 export. The repetitive first pass is automated; the final decisions stay with you.

Common questions, clear answers.

Can I use AI to create subtitles?

Yes. Vid2Subs uses Cloudflare Workers AI with Whisper Large V3 Turbo to transcribe the audio prepared from your video. The studio uses the timing information returned by the model and lets you edit the result. AI can mishear names, accents, or quiet speech, so play the video back and check the subtitles before publishing.

How can I generate subtitles for free?

Open the Vid2Subs studio, upload a short supported video, choose a font and animation, and start transcription. The current site does not require an account or payment from visitors. Video files are limited to 50 MB and five minutes, and AI transcription depends on Cloudflare's available allowance; free use is not unlimited.

Which app is best for video subtitles?

The best choice depends on your workflow. Vid2Subs is designed for short videos when you want AI-assisted transcription, precise timeline edits, word-level styling selections, and SRT or supported MP4 export in a browser. If you need longer files, collaboration, or a specific professional codec, compare tools against those requirements before choosing.

How do I enable subtitles?

If you exported an SRT file, upload or attach it as a subtitle track in the video player or publishing platform, then switch on that platform's captions control. The exact menu varies by platform. If you exported a captioned MP4 from Vid2Subs, the subtitles are burned into the picture and are always visible; they cannot be toggled off.

Will an SRT file include my font and animation?

No. An SRT file stores subtitle text and cue timings, not visual styling. Choose SRT when you need an editable caption track for another app or platform. For a video with the selected fonts, colors, placement, and supported effects already visible, use the MP4 export when your browser supports it.

Does the tool upload my complete video?

No complete source video is sent to the transcription endpoint. Vid2Subs prepares audio locally and sends only audio chunks needed by Cloudflare Workers AI. The original file remains in the browser for preview and export. Transcription still uses a cloud service, so avoid uploading recordings you are not authorized to process.
